Former Ambassador Daniel Taub Reflects on His Service in London

Born in Great Britain in 1962, Daniel Taub was the Israeli Ambassador to the United Kingdom between 2011 and 2015. The alumnus of Harvard University immigrated to Israel in 1989. He served in the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) as a combat medical officer before joining the Israeli Foreign Ministry in 1991. He is now the director of strategy and planning at the Yad Hanadiv foundation.

In 2015, when Daniel Taub was leaving the ambassadorial post, he did reflect his four years as an ambassador.

On renouncing his British citizenship, Daniel Taub recalls his response. He informed her majesty the Queen that he felt privileged raising his children in their country of birth. Furthermore, it was an opportunity to bring the two nations together. According to Daniel Taub, this objective has been met during his tenure. His role in London was to make people appreciate both the Israeli peoples and leadership’s position.

While peace with the Palestinians has been elusive, Daniel Taub appreciates the tenacity of the peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan. These have helped reduce tensions in the region. However, Daniel Taub points out the danger presented by ISIS and Iran.

The agreement with Iran poses the risk of a nuclear-armed Iran and financially emboldened Hizbollah and Hamas. Also, Ambassador Taub notes a reconfiguration of interests with growing rapport between the Arab states which need to be supported.

According to Daniel Taub, the U.S is still committed to the security of Israel. Despite some initiatives from the White House, the U.S continues to supply Israel with the latest scientific breakthroughs.

In Britain, it is the feeling of Ambassador Taub that there is need to recalibrate the relations. The two countries have many things in common, not least of which are shared liberal values.
